The United Nations has rallied governments in the world to promote care and support system for older persons as it noted that by 2030, elderly persons aged 65 and above will outnumber the younger generation globally.
The UN marked the International Day for Older Persons on Monday, the same day that Philippines launched the Elderly Filipino Week.
Concern for senior citizens welfare has also been a priority in Vatican with Pope Francis deciding in 2021 to launch the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly.
Celebrated every fourth Sunday of July, usually coinciding with the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, who are grandparents of Jesus Christ, the Grandparents and Elderly Day is currently being observed by many countries to demonstrate concern for senior citizens.
During the July celebration, Pope Francis called on the world to focus their attention to the condition of many aged folks who are left alone. He encouraged the youth to devote time to these senior individuals.
The UN has revealed that the elderly age group is growing fast each year.
This makes it necessary for governments and concerned institutions to address a growing demand for healthcare and social support.
On Monday, the organization of nations highlighed the challenges the elderly face and the impact they have had on society.
This year’s theme of the 34th International Day for older persons is =“Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.”
As part of the program, the UN gathered experts to New York to discuss policies and practices needed to better care for the elderly.
Elderly condition experts will address the shortage of caregivers worldwide, the need for training for specialized care, and the importance of protecting the rights of the elderly and their caregivers.
