Marikina police chief sacked for possible negligence in handling of sexual assault of policewoman

The Eastern Police District has relieved the Marikina City police chief from his post in connection with the criminal charges filed by a female police officer against two of her colleagues.
EPD Director Brig. Gen. Aden Lagradante told a press conference on Monday (Sept. 1) that Col. Geoffrey Fernandez has been removed from his post while an investigation is being conducted into the incident.
Fernandez is under investigation for possible negligence in connection with the case.
“We administratively relieved the chief of police of Marikina for the pending investigation. When we say he is under investigation, we’ll investigate if the chief of police is remiss in his function or of his duties in overseeing his personnel,” said Lagradante.
He said the substation commander where the two accused police officers are assigned has also been sacked.
Reports revealed that the complainant accused the suspects, a patrolman and a staff sergeant, of molesting her inside a police mobile parked at a jogging lane in the city.
She recalled having been invited by the two suspects for coffee but was instead brought to the jogging place.
Both suspects are being held at the EPD Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit. They are facing administrative charges and a criminal case of acts of lasciviousness and violation of Republic Act 8353 or the Anti-Rape Law.
