Comelec disqualifies Pasig congressional bet over lewd remarks

5/8/25, 8:56 AM

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Second Division has disqualified Pasig congressional aspirant Christian Sia from the May 2025 elections following controversial statements he made about single mothers during a campaign event last month.

In a 10-page resolution, the Second Division granted the petition filed by the Comelec Task Force on Safeguarding Fear and Exclusion (SAFE), which sought Sia’s disqualification over his inappropriate remarks.

"Wherefore, premises considered, the Commission (Second Division) resolved, as it hereby resolves to grant the Petition," the resolution stated. It was promulgated on Wednesday and released to the media on Thursday.

"Accordingly, Respondent is hereby disqualified from continuing as a candidate for Member, House of Representatives, Lone Legislative District of Pasig City, in relation to the 2025 National and Local Elections," the ruling added.

Should Sia win in the 2025 elections, the resolution orders that his proclamation be suspended pending final resolution of the case.

The case arose from a campaign event where Sia stated that, if elected, he would be willing to sleep with lonely, menstruating single mothers once a year—a comment that sparked public backlash.

In his official response, Sia defended his statement as an exercise of free speech and denied that it was discriminatory against women.

However, the Second Division disagreed, stating that Sia’s remarks were "laden with sexist, objectifying, and demeaning language" and reflected "a troubling lack of respect for human dignity" and a "serious disregard for the standards of decency and ethical conduct expected of anyone seeking public office."

“These were not isolated slips of the tongue; they were deliberate, public statements made during official campaign activities that caused injury to the honor and emotional well-being of specific individuals, particularly women,” the resolution said.

Sia may still file a motion for reconsideration before the Comelec en banc.
