Mormon Women Now Have New Sacred Undergarments – Why the Change?

PROVO, Utah – Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often called Mormons, wear special sacred undergarments under their clothes as a sign of faith—even during hot summer days.
For Brigham Young University student Dara Layton, this summer feels very different. On a 100-degree day, she opened her door wearing a tank top—something she had never worn before, the National Public Radio reported.
Until recently, Mormon women had to wear garments with cap sleeves that covered their shoulders. But last year, the church introduced a new option: undergarments with thick straps instead of sleeves. This is the first time in nearly 200 years that sleeveless garments have been offered.
Many women in the church are thrilled, saying they had been requesting this change for years. Others feel the male church leadership should have listened sooner. For Layton, though, it simply feels freeing.
She joked that the outfit provides her more tan.
Although the new design is not yet officially available in the United States, many women have already managed to buy them abroad. Some even share tips on social media about styling clothes with the new garments.
Layton says the change has opened up her wardrobe in ways she never expected.
“I probably went on the biggest shopping spree of my life,” she told the NPR. “Now I can finally wear tank tops and sleeveless shirts.”
Her closet is now filled with sleeveless tops—including the same tank top in five different colors.
The sacred undergarments, which come as a top and knee-length bottoms, are first given to adult members during temple ceremonies. They are always white, though the fabric can vary from cotton to nylon or spandex blends.
Church leaders compare the garments to other forms of religious clothing, like a nun’s habit or a Buddhist monk’s robe—visible or not, they symbolize commitment to God.
For Layton, even in the summer heat, the extra layer of clothing remains meaningful.
“They represent a two-way promise between me and God,” she said. “It helps me remember to bring Christ into my everyday life.”
