DILIMAN, Quezon City — Residents in three areas are advised to prepare against expected extreme heat conditions with index levels possibly reaching 41°C in the following days, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
In its latest weather bulletin, Pagasa announced that Aparri town in Cagayan and the cities of Tuguegarao and Cotabato are projected to record the highest heat index values.
Based on expert analysis, Pagasa administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando noted that the said locations are classified under the 'extreme caution' level, where heat indices range from 33°C to 41°C.
Dr. Servando cautioned residents in the area to stay indoors or else take precautionary steps because extended exposure to such temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Aside from the three areas, Pagasa likewise cited that Metro Manila will also be experiencing high heat with Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City expected to reach 38°C and the Science Garden in Quezon City at 37°C.
The weather bureau further reported that multiple areas across the country will also be tagged under 'extreme caution' with temperatures reaching up to 40°C in several provinces and cities that include the cities of Dagupan and Laoang in Northern Luzon as well as Iloilo City in Panay and Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
It also issued an El Niño Alert, warning of the high likelihood of the phenomenon developing in the Middle of the year, which may result in drier-than-normal conditions and possible drought in some areas.
In the meantime, health authorities are reminding the public to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours and wear appropriate clothing to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
