Famous pop singer Miley Cyrus has been sued for allegedly copying American Bruno Mars’ hit song “When I Was Your Man” for her song “Flowers”.
The release of “Flowers” by Cyrus in January 2023, which later earned the pop singer her first Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance, was a hit among the public. With its perceived reference to the 2013 song “When I Was Your Man”, it was streamed all across the world and used in several platform media, such as TikTok.
Many have speculated that the song “Flowers” may have been a response to Mars’ song. Miley expresses that she can buy herself flowers and hold her own hand whereas in Bruno’s song, he expresses sadness over not being able to do so for his partner.
However, any direct connection between the songs has remained unconfirmed by the artists themselves.
On Monday, (September 16), TMZ reported that Tempo Music Investment, who stated that they own a portion of the U.S copyrights to the song, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles court against Cyrus.
According to the lawsuit, she copied Mars’ song.
Tempo claimed that there were too many similarities between the two songs. The firm stated that the melody and harmony were similar, and the striking resemblance of the lyrics proves that it wasn’t a coincidence. As per the lawsuit, the song “Flowers” would not have existed without “When I Was Your Man”.
Mars and songwriter Philip Lawrence, however, were not listed as the plaintiffs.
The company is asking for Cyrus to refrain from publicly performing the song and to stop all distributions of it as well and additionally, an undisclosed amount of payment in damages.
Cyrus has yet to release a public statement regarding her side in this.
