Sara Duterte's Nonchalance and the Crisis of Accountability

2/9/25, 4:00 PM
In a nation where public trust in government is already fragile, Vice President Sara Duterte’s flippant response to her impeachment—comparing it to a heartbreak—only deepens the people’s disillusionment. “Mas masakit pa ang maiwanan ng boyfriend or girlfriend kaysa ma-impeach ng House of Representatives,” she quipped, as if the process of holding leaders accountable is nothing more than a trivial inconvenience.
But this is no laughing matter.
The charges against Duterte are serious: the unexplained spending of ₱125 million in confidential funds within just 11 days, coupled with threats against the President, First Lady, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. These are not mere political maneuverings—they are clear violations of the public trust. If an ordinary employee misuses company funds, they are fired without hesitation. Why should it be any different for a high-ranking public official entrusted with the people’s money?

The Vice President’s dismissal of the issue speaks volumes about her attitude toward governance. Instead of addressing the allegations with transparency, she resorts to deflection, arrogance, and political theatrics. She hides behind the label of "confidential funds," but accountability does not mean exposing sensitive details—it means showing proof that public funds were used for legitimate government functions.
And let’s be clear: ₱125 million is not a small amount. That money could have provided healthcare, education, or disaster relief for thousands of Filipinos. Yet, in just over a week, it was gone—with no clear explanation. How is that acceptable?
Yes, politics plays a role in any impeachment process, but at its core, this is about the Filipino people demanding justice. If public officials can freely misuse funds without consequence, what stops the next leader from doing worse? Duterte’s impeachment should not be about power struggles—it should be about ensuring that those in government serve the people, not their own interests.
Vice President Duterte’s cavalier attitude toward impeachment reflects not just a lack of remorse but a dangerous mindset—that leaders are above accountability. She may dismiss this process now, but the Filipino people will not forget. The real heartbreak is not her impeachment, but the betrayal of the public’s trust.(Tambuli Ng Bayan-Ronnie Estrada)
