Hajji Alejandro: A Voice of a Generation, Now in Need of Our Prayers

2/28/25, 3:12 AM

Hajji Alejandro’s voice has been a familiar sound to generations of Filipinos. From his early days with the Circus Band to his rise as a solo artist, his songs have been a soundtrack to countless lives, weaving memories through melodies that continue to resonate. Now, as he battles Stage 4 colon cancer in the ICU, his fans, fellow artists, and friends rally together in prayer, hoping for his comfort and strength.

Born on December 26, 1954, in Alaminos, Pangasinan, Hajji’s musical journey was nothing short of extraordinary. He was the first-ever winner of the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival, solidifying his place in Original Pilipino Music (OPM) history. His heartfelt ballads like "Nakapagtataka" and "Panakip Butas" became anthems of love, loss, and longing, shaping the golden era of OPM alongside icons like Basil Valdez, Rey Valera, and Nonoy Zuñiga. Even in recent years, he remained an active performer with the Hitmakers, proving that his passion for music was undiminished by time.

Beyond his musical career, Hajji was a proud Bedan, having attended San Beda from grade school to high school before pursuing a degree in Marketing Management at Ateneo de Manila University. He was also an athlete, playing for the San Beda Red Cubs in the NCAA, showing that his talents extended beyond the stage. His resilience and dedication in various fields made him an inspiration to many.

Now, facing the toughest battle of his life, Hajji’s condition has worsened, with his cancer metastasizing to his liver and lungs. He has been intubated and recently suffered seizures. His family, while deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support, has requested privacy as they focus on his care.

As we reflect on the music he has gifted us, let us also offer prayers for his peace and well-being. Hajji Alejandro has given so much to Filipino music, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. Today, we give back in the only way we can—by sending him our thoughts, our love, and our prayers.

Hajji, may you find strength in the love that surrounds you. Your voice will forever be part of the Filipino soul.(TAMBULI NG BAYAN-Ronnie Estrada)
