He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.
— United States president Thomas Jefferson
MAYPAJO, Caloocan City — The Good Book states: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
This is found in Exodus 20:16 and is one of the Ten Commandments given to Moses by the Almighty God in Mount Sinai.
Given the expressed command in Mosaic Law, Vice President Sara Duterte is inadvertently reminding her detractors about false testimony even as she challenged members of the House of Representatives, alleging she has unexplained wealth, to point out which part of her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) is questionable.
In obvious irritation, VP Duterte asked incredulously: “There are members of the House of Representatives who said I have unexplained wealth. I always tell them to show me where that is. Which part is unexplained? Because when you say unexplained, it’s something that cannot be explained, right? Like how did that get into my SALN?”
She goes on, saying: “They don’t say anything. They just say, 'Ah, she has unexplained wealth'.”
As if to prove the allegations regarding the issue, Bicol Saro party-list representative Terry Ridon presented copies of the Vice President’s SALNs since 2008, which indicated that the Vice President posted a net worth of ₱18 million in 2008, an amount that now stands at ₱88 million as of end of December 2024—an astonishing increase of 378 percent.
But the daughter of former president Rodrigo 'Rody' Duterte (FPRRD) retorted: “So what are they thinking, I've just been sitting around for 16 years like . . . I’m not earning money, not working?"
This has made us laugh out loud since in any democratic country that professes equality in justice, suspects are found guilty when there is solid and fool-proof evidence of their misdeed.
So, we query, has VP Inday SARA truly been caught red-handed?
