With just eight months to go before certificates of candidacy for senator start pouring into the Commission on Elections, the camp of former Vice President Leni Robredo are still undecided on whether or not she will join the race as the formidable UniTeam starts showing serious cracks in its vaunted unity.
The opposition, to be bannered under the Liberal Party, already has three confirmed senatorial bets, namely, former Senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno.
Robredo’s popularity has failed to register in the results of poll surveys conducted last year by three survey firms. She fell below the top 12, together with former Senator Mar Roxas, who, like Robredo, lost a presidential bid.
However, the three newcomers in poll surveys have yet to prove credibility and respect that veterans Pulse Asia and Social Weather Station have already earned.
“It would be advisable for Leni to join the midterm elections as senatorial candidate if she intends to run again for president,” a Lower House lawmaker who requested anonymity told Senior Times.
The solon said Robredo’s remains popular and will most likely win a Senate seat.
“2025 is good timing for Robredo since the UniTeam is starting to crumble as a result of the unrelenting bickering between Speaker Romualdez and Sara Duterte,” he explained.
Pangilinan, Aquino and Diokno were among the early members of the LP senatorial slate for 2025 as confirmed by party spokesperson and former Senator Leila De Lima.
De Lima said the three will represent the opposition in the 2025 senatorial race.
Pangilinan ran in 2022 as runningmate of then presidential candidate Robredo. The former chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture turned to farming after his unsuccessful vice presidential bid.
Aquino, cousin of the late President Noynoy Aquino, will bank on the political clout of the Aquino family which remains popular and revered clan in Philippine politics.
Diokno will be make his third attempt at joining the Senate.
