Pope Francis is not wavering from his landmark decision to allow Catholic priests to grant blessings for “same-sex” or “irregular” couples.
Interviewed over Italian TV Program “Che Tempo Che Fa”, the Catholic leader defended the decision as it met opposition as it met opposition from various quarters including bishops and other Church leaders.
“Blessings for all, even for ‘irregular’ couples, just as God ‘blesses everyone, everyone, everyone,” he stated.
“Sometimes decisions are not accepted, but in most cases when decisions are not accepted it is because they are not understood,” Pope Francis explained.
The pontiff aired his view on the issue in response to a question about his approval of the recommendation of Vatican’s doctrinal department to allow the benediction of couples of the same sex for their union.
His declaration of blessings for all is known by its Latin title “Fiducia Suppplicans (Supplicating Trust).
“We must take these people by the hand, not condemn them from the start,” he said.
“This is the pastoral work of the Church,” Pope Francis said as he urged confessors to “forgive everything.”
The Vatican City head recalled that during his 54 years of priesthood, he only denied forgiveness to just one faithful “due to the person’s hyporcrisy.”
He said God “is not not scandalized by our sins because He is a father, and He accompanies us.
The Catholic leader reportedly aired his first public comments about “same-sex” marriage on December 18. His disclosure of the “same-sex” blessing decision sparked widespread debate in the Church, among bishops and other Catholic leaders, particularly in Africa where priests refused to implement it.
