Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte denounced as “politically motivated and baseless” the move in the House of Representatives to impeach his sister, Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a statement, Duterte named Iloilo Janette Garin as among the leading figures in the gathering of signatures of lawmakers for the endorsement of the fourth impeachment complaint against the vice president.
It will be recalled that Garin has been criminally charged by the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte in connection with the deaths allegedly caused by the Dengvaxia vaccine that she pushed for public school students during her term as health secretary.
Rep. Duterte said it was clear that Garin orchestrated the rush in the gathering of signatures
A total 215 members of the Lower House endorsed the fourth complaint that resulted in the impeachment of Vice President Duterte. Now transformed into the Articles of Impeachment, the complaint was transmitted to the Senate also on Wednesday (Feb. 5) when it was approved in the Lower House.
Duterte said the decision was “a clear act of political persecution”.
This administration is treading on dangerous ground,” the solon said.
He said the impeachment was pursued notwithstanding a recent Iglesia NI Cristo rally that indicated its misgivings against the impeachment proceedings.
According to the Davao City lawmaker the impeachment process has further escalated public frustration over the Marcos administration.
“If they think they can push this sham impeachment without consequence, they are gravely mistaken,” he declared.
He added: “The growing discontent and frustration across the country will not be contained for long.”
