MMDA: Bicycles to have exclusive use of underutilized Metro Manila bike lanes

3/11/24, 2:10 PM
Despite admitting that bicycle lanes are underutilized, the Metro Manila Development Authority has decided to grant bicycles that are “pedal-assisted” the exclusive use of the lanes.
This developed as the agency revealed that electronic vehicles will be banned from using national roads in Metro Manila starting April 15.
MMDA chief Romando Artes said starting April 15, the bicycle lanes/bike lanes so designated on national roads in Metro Manila will have the sole prerogative to use them.
Bicycle lanes were first introduced at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to allow workers to report for work notwithstanding the ban and later lack of public utility vehicles during the time.
The bicycle riders remained in control of the said road years after public transport conditions returned to normal.
Many motorists are complaining because at least 20 percent of the already narrow roads in Metro Manila have been allotted to almost a handful bicycle riders.
The situation is even more pathetic along EDSA where special bus lanes have been designated, giving hundreds of thousands of private vehicle owners no other recourse but to endure heavy traffic on the full stretch of the avenue.
Meanwhile, Artes said the Metro Manila Council has filed passed a resolution banning e-vehicles on national roads and highways in the NCR.
The list of roads that are bar e-vehicles are the following
- Roxas Boulevard
Taft Avenue
SLEX
Shaw Boulevard
Ortigas Avenue
Magsaysay Boulevard
Aurora Boulevard
Quezon Avenue
Commonwealth Avenue
Bonifacio Avenue
Rizal Avenue
Del Pan
Marcos Highway
McArthur Highway
Recto Avenue
President Quirino Avenue
Araneta Avenue
EDSA
Katipunan/C.P. Garcia
Southeast Metro Manila Expressway
Elliptical Road
Mindanao Avenue
Marcos Highway
Violators of the e-vehicle ban will be fined P2,500.
Those caught violating the ban and are discovered to be without driver’s license will have their -e-vehicle impounded.
