In an apparent dig at his predecessor, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated on Tuesday (April 16) that the seizure of some P13-billion worth of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride), the largest in years, was made by law enforcers without a single death on the part of the suspects.
Police hauled off nearly 1,630 kilograms or 1.8 tons of shabu after they intercepted its transporters at a checkpoint in Alitagtag, Batangas on Monday.
Follow up operations were swiftly carried out by various anti-narcotics agencies to arrest other suspects, including the alleged mastermind.
The seized illegal drug reportedly has a street value of over P13 billion,” it was revealed by officials.
“This is the biggest shipment of shabu that we’ve seized, but not one person died,” said Marcos after congratulating the police units in Alitagtag that made the arrest.
“No shots were fired and nobody was injured because we operated slowly,” he said.
His statement is believed to be a sneer at former President Rodrigo Duterte whose anti-drug campaign had resulted in the death of over 6,000 suspected pushers and drug smuggler, many of whom were believed to be innocent.
The killings during Duterte’s presidency has triggered the filing of formal complaints against Duterte before the International Criminal Court.
But as the probe started, Duterte quickly move to remove the Philippines from ICC membership.
“This should be the approach in the drug war for me and the most important objective is to stop the smuggling of illegal drugs into the Philippines,” said Marcos.
However, Duterte has also been outspoken in accusing Marcos of being a drug user.
Marcos denied his predecessor’s claim but responded with a claim that Duterte has been using opioid fentanyl himself.
