Manila solons wants an end to extended BBM-Sara honeymoon

4/20/24, 1:35 PM

A neophyte administration congressman wants an end to the extended political honeymoon between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his 2022 runningmate, Vice President Sara Duterte

Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua said the spat between Marcos and former President Rodrigo Duterte should have prompted the vice president to resign her post as secretary of the Department of Education.

“The Vice President should show some decency by resigning from her DepEd post at the very least. Her family unleashed a barrage of insults and attacks directly to the President and yet she does nothing and is still enjoying the perks of being part of the official family,’ said a statement issued by Chua.

The Manila lawmaker appeared to be convinced that the vice president can control members of her family who have been throwing tirades against the president.

However, observers noted that his reaction to the on-going spat between the president and his predecessor may have been triggered by the recent attacks of the First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos against VP Duterte for her alleged inaction to her attacks against the chief executive.

It will be recalled, however, that the vice president has maintained political independence from her father as demonstrated by her rebuff of her Duterte’s choice for presidential candidate in 2022.

Instead of running in tandem with then President Duterte’s trusted former assistant Sen. Bong Go, Sara supported Marcos’ presidential bid.

The vice president’s endorsement of Marcos was widely believed as the biggest factor for the latter’s huge win in the 2022 presidential race.

However, for Chua, the vice president has failed to “draw the line” and had been pretending to be supportive of the Marcos presidency.

“She cannot have the best of both worlds by being a fence sitter while her family and their allies challenge the authority and mandate of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. while having little to show for in terms of substantive results at the Department of Education where she is secretary,” stressed Chua.
