Makabayan bloc joins Marcos bashing over chopper ride to Coldplay concert

1/21/24, 8:40 AM
As many expected the Makabayan bloc joined the the public denunciation of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for using a government chopper attend the Coldplay “Music of the Spheres” in Bulacan on Friday (January 19).
However, the controversy is not expected to last long as the Marcos camp and its usual defense team kept its silence.
The Presidential Security Group accepted blame on the incident saying that using a helicopter to transport Marcos to the Philippine Arena was a security decision and was done to avoid the monstrous traffic jam leading to the Philippine Arena, the concert venue.
Gabriela Partylist Rep. Arlene Brosas described the Marcos action as 'insensitive and out-of-touch' considering that ordinary Filipinos have to endure daily traffic due to the mass transportation crisis.
"An ordinary Filipino endures heavy traffic while commuting via jeep and other affordable public transportation. Meanwhile, the country's president utilizes taxpayer funds to conveniently travel in a helicopter to reach a concert,". Brosas lamented.
"It was very insensitive and out-of-touch. Kaya naman pala hindi nag-atubili ang presidente na tanggalan ng kabuhayan ang mga jeepney drivers -- hindi kasi danas ang hirap na nararanasan ng ordinaryong Pilipino sa kawalan ng maayos na pang-masang transportasyon," Rep. Brosas added.
She described as a “sorry attempt to save face” the statement of PSG Major Gen. Nelson Morales who came to the defense of his commander-in-chief.
"The fact that President Marcos Jr. would take a chopper to go see a concert is a complete waste of public funds," the opposition lawmaker said.
Kabataan Partylist Rep. Raoul Manuel also assailed Malacanang for the incident.
Security threat ang malalang traffic sa maraming Pilipino araw-araw, di lang tuwing may concert,” he said.
