LTO imposes 90-day suspension on cabbie’s license for charging Php 10,000 fare

12/29/23, 8:40 AM

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has taken decisive action against a taxi driver involved in an exorbitant fare scandal at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), issuing a 90-day preventive suspension on the driver's license.

The incident, which gained widespread attention after a viral video captured the driver charging a staggering P10,000 fare to a foreign tourist, sparked outrage and prompted swift intervention.

In the Show Cause Order (SCO) directed to the driver operating under license plate ABG 7845, the LTO cited violations of multiple provisions outlined in Joint Administrative Order 2014-01.

The driver, identified as Arnel Acle, faces allegations of overcharging passengers, displaying discourteous and arrogant behavior towards passengers, and violating franchise regulations.

"Under the guidance of Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista, we are actively collaborating with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to determine appropriate sanctions against the taxi's operator,” said LTO chief Vigor Mendoza.

Secretary Bautista had previously announced that the entire fleet belonging to the taxi company responsible for the flagged cab will no longer be permitted to operate within NAIA premises.

Describing the incident as a blatant violation of the law, Mendoza emphasized the gravity of the situation, particularly considering its widespread dissemination on social media platforms.

Acle’s identity was traced when investigators reviewed a CCTV footage that showed the cab’s markings.

However, he has gone into hiding after remitting his earnings to the taxi company in Valenzuela last December 19.

“We are coordinating with the Philippine National POlice and our local offices to locate this man. Hindi tayo papayag na palampasin na lang ang ginawa niya dahil nagdulot ito ng kahihiyan sa ating bansa at sa lahat ng mga Pilipino,” Mendoza said.
