The modus operandi in the unabated cyber threats and disinformation allegedly favoring China in its unjustified claim of vast West Philippine Sea territories have been cloned from the same information tactics Russia has waged in Europe.
Visiting Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene made this comparison as she revealed that her country is offering Philippines help in confronting the cyberspace campaign against the country.
Sakaliene concluded her visit to the Philippines on Wednesday, the first ever made by a Lithuanian defense official.
She warned that her country has been confront4ed with the same threats by bigger neighbors, noting that the disinformation tactics have become more sophisticated and coordinated.
“It seems that Russia and China sometimes are piloting certain methods in one reigon and then applying them in another region,’ she told the news media in a press conference.
Her country has been grappling with similar threats from Russia that are quite the same as the incidences being experienced by the Philippines, Sakaliene said.
“From what we hear, the Philippines (is confronted) with Chinese informational activity in the region, and pressure, for example, this gaslighting about the incidents in the West Philippine Sea,” the defense official said.
She added: “So you also see a lot of disinformation and propaganda.”
The Lithuanian official lauded the continued bid of the Philippines to adopt a transparent position on the territorial issue with China, saying that this is the “golden standard” that smaller nations must observe in responding to larger aggressors without blowing up the controversy.
“I think it’s a wonderful solution… and also very useful globally, showing what geopolitical challenges certain countries are facing,” Sakaliene said.
