In a bid to ease traffic congestion, local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila were asked to adjust their working hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Monday, April 15.
The Metro Manila Council (MMC) on Wednesday said it has passed a resolution mandating LGUs in the National Capital Region (NCR) to adopt the modified working hours due to worsening traffic congestion.
"The persistent traffic congestion in Metro Manila demands innovative solutions for the improvement of commuting conditions and the well-being of the citizens of the NCR," the resolution read.
"The findings derived from the MMDA study underscore the potential effectiveness of implementing a standardized working schedule for government offices in Metro Manila, particularly during peak hours, in reducing traffic congestion," it added.
The MMC encouraged Metro Manila local governments "to enact their respective ordinances" for the work schedule adjustment.
Meanwhile, MMC urged national government agencies in Metro Manila to adopt the modified schedule.
The Management Association of the Philippines earlier urged the government to declare a state of calamity in Metro Manila due to the worsening traffic situation.
The Palace has since rejected the proposal.
Data from the 2023 TomTom Traffic Index listed Metro Manila as having the worst traffic congestion among 387 metro areas globally.
