TEHRAN, Iran — On the designation of Mojtaba Khamenei as successor to his father and Iran's Supreme Leader, Iranians took to the streets in opposition, chanting and praying against his appointment.
Mojtaba's father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was slain during an allied American-Israeli attack on Tehran, where several family members of the Iranian leader's family were either injured or killed.
According to a video posted on social media on Sunday, March 8, 2026, shortly after Mojtaba's appointment, Iranians protested the move, sayingvKhamenei's son is unfit to succeed his father.
In the 17-second clip, said to have been filmed at night from a building window, women’s voices could be heard shouting “Death to Mojtaba” in Persian while religious chants can be heard in the distance.
Media coverage of the protests, however, was unable to determine exactly where the footage was filmed or whether similar chants were heard elsewhere in the city.
It was the Assembly of Experts, the religious body tasked with electing Iran's Supreme Leader, who designated Mojtaba the successor to his father.
