For the first time in 2025, fuel price rollback set Jan. 28

Finally, a whiff of good news.

After a series of price increases that sent fuel cost to the highest in months, oil firms will rollback prices of their products starting Tuesday (Jan. 28).

The oil companies issued separate advisories declaring a reduction of PHP0.80 per liter in gasoline prices; PHP0.20 for diesel and PHP0.50 for kerosene.

Seaoil Philippines Corp. and Shell Pilipinas Corp. made the announcement to cover the three oil products while Cleanfuel revealed it will lower prices in the same level but only on diesel and gasoline.

The price adjustments will take effect at 6 am, Tuesday for all firms. Cleafuel will lower pump prices at two hours later.

While motorists welcome the news, they remain skeptical that that the reductions were only meant to prepare the public for higher fuel cost in the coming weeks.

The price cuts are also not enough to counterbalance the series of hikes imposed by oil companies since the start of 2025.

The Department of Energy-Oil Industry Management Bureau (DOE-OIMB) had projected the reduction in prices as it noted that this could be triggered by the reopening of refineries and ports in the US Gulf Coast.

The proposed tariffs of newly-installed President Donald Trump was also cited as another probable reason for the lowering of fuel cost.

Last Tuesday, oil companies upped their prices to the highest yet in many months. Gasoline prices increased by PHP1.65; diesel by PHP2.70 and kerosene by PHP2.50.
