Don’t let PI advocates ram Chacha idea down your throats, read - Comelec

Responding to mounting reports that the People’s Initiative (PI) signature idea is being rammed down voters’ throat, the Commission on Elections called on Filipinos to make sure to read and understand why they are being asked to sign the PI petition.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia aired this reminder as reports indicated that members of the House of Representatives, mostly members of the majority bloc, have been asking constituents to support the Charter change bid by signing the PI.
Despite the fact that similar campaigns have already been pursued for the same objectives in the pst, many Filipinos still do not understand how this will impact into their life and future, a television news program has reported.
In Albay, Camarines Sur and Quezon City, voters are being asked to sign the PI petition without granting the prospective signatories a briefing about this Charter change process and its effect on them.
“Even in our ordinary lives, you don’t just sign documents without knowing what it is for. You should do it voluntarily and fully understand their implications,” said Garcia in a news media interview.
Garcia urged the public to be fully aware of the issues involved in the PI signature campaign.
“If you decide to sign, sign clearly and correctly so that the local Comelec won’t have difficulty verifying them. Also, if you will sign, use the one in your registration records. If they look different, even if you claim it as your signature, we can invalidate them,” the Comelec chief added.
Accusations of bribery have also been raised in connection with the PI bid.
Congressmen making rounds in their respective congressional districts claim only provisions on the economy will be subjected to amendments should the PI campaign succeed.
However, the fact that congressmen are behind the PI bid makes this claim unreliable, according to Charter change oppositors.
