INTRAMUROS, Manila — Amidst the ongoing probe on corruption involving private contractors in the government's infrastructure development projects, Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman George Erwin Garcia revealed that the poll body has received information linking some of the said contractors to campaign contributions made to certain candidates in the 2022 national and local elections (NLE).

On the sidelines of the Comelec's 85th anniversary celebrations, Garcia confirmed there are at least 3 to 5 contractors who have been identified as having given campaign donations to several candidates some of whom won elected positions in the bureacracy or were reelected in the Upper and Lower chambers of Congress.

In addition, he detailed that one winning candidate was connected to a contractor in Bulacan.
The election chief announced that the Commission will be sending letters to the identified contractors to verify whether the contributions or donations they gave to candidates came from their companies or from their individual officers.

Garcia explained that while corporations are considered separate from their officials, liability may still extend to the latter if illegal acts are proven.

When asked if candidates who accepted such donations could also face accountability, Garcia said the Comelec is still determining if liability could extend to the recipients.
