Biden, Trump win party nominations easily; forge a rematch

3/13/24, 10:10 AM

US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are headed for a rematch for the presidency after winning the nomination of their respective political parties on Tuesday (March 13).

Biden, 81, will represent the Democratic Party in a second political contest with Republican Trump, 77.

This is the first rematch in American presidential race since 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Republican, defeated Democratic Party challenger Adlai Stevenson.

They are the first former presidents to face each other anew since 1912, with incumbent President William Howard Taft challenged by former President Theodore Roosevelt. However, it was then New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson who clinched the presidency.

Biden remained popular among his partymates as he won the nomination on Tuesday with over 1,968 delegates.

Trump’s 1,215 delegates gave him the Republic nomination but this early a group calling themselves Republican Voters Against Trump vowed to campaign against his return to the White House.

In a statement, Biden said: “Voters now have a choice to make about the future of this country. Are we going to stand up and defend our demoracy or let others tear it down? Will we restore the right to choose and protect our freedoms or let extremists take them away?”

Reacting to the rematch, Trump said he will not celebrate the nomination but instead focus in defeating Biden.

“We’re going to drill, baby, drill. We’re going to close our borders. “We;re going to do things like nobody has every seen before. And we’re going to make our nation’s economy be the best ever in the world,” the former president said.

Clinching their political party nomination was quite easy for the two stalwarts but both are facing criticisms that leaves voters little choice on who to vote.

Trump is facing four criminal cases that include his alleged attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 elections that Biden won.

On the other hand, Biden has to overcome doubts aired against his mental and physical condition. He is the oldest president to serve the US at 81.
