A 70-year-old man in California was rescued by authorities a week after going missing while on the Rubicon Trail, an off-road route in the country.
Police found Warren Elliott in good condition nine miles from where he was last seen after a days-long search in tough terrain on the Rubicon Trail in Placer County, as reported by ABC News.
The Rubicon Trail is an approximately 22-mile-long route located in the Sierra Nevada of the western United States, west of Lake Tahoe and east of Sacramento. It features a popular off-highway vehicle trail.
According to El Dorado County's official website, the Rubicon Trail is widely considered the "crown jewel of all off-highway trails" and is known as one of the most challenging, rated 10 on a scale of one to 10, due to its narrow passages, rocky climbs, and occasional mud holes.
Warren went missing after walking away from his group last week. Despite being familiar with the area, he went in the wrong direction upon returning from his walk, authorities said.
He managed to drink water from a river and ate a "handful of berries" while lost, according to the sheriff's office.
Fortunately, the senior citizen was found "safe and uninjured" Thursday morning (Philippine time).
Authorities said Warren was airlifted out of the area by helicopter. He was transported to a command post where he was reunited with his family.
"This is a tremendous relief for Mr. Elliott's family and friends," the sheriff's office said. "A heartfelt thank you to all the search and rescue teams who tirelessly assisted from across the state."
