Senior citizens may now be accredited and be employed as community tour guides in Intramuros, manila.

This was revealed by the Department of Tourism as it started to implement the Tourism Legacy and Livelihood Program. The DOT partnered with the National Commission of Senior Citizens to pursue this employment program for elderly Filipinos.

According to the DOT the initiative is in consonance with government’s inclusive tourism agenda which is the creation of opportunities for senior citizens to join community-based, elderly friendly tourism programs.

Under the TLLP, qualified senior citizens are interviewed and qualified to complete a week-long training, lectures and mock tours prior to the issuance of DOT accreditation.

Last month, the DOT accredited 15 senior citizen tour guides. Two of them were former overseas Filipino workers who have retired but still want to be employed.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco personally welcomed the accredited tourist guides who shared with her stories of their lives.

“I”m so impressed by the variety of professions and backgrounds of those that have successfully passed our senior citizens community tour guide training, but even more impressed by the overarching purpose that drivers you to be here, not just for leisure, not to address boredome perhas, but more importantly, to serve our country,” Frasco told the new tourist guides.

She stressed that the DoT has prioritizeda program to create more livelihood and advancement opportunities while recognizing the vital role of tourism workers as keepers of the nation’s stories.
