Ethel Caterham, the new title holder as the world’s oldest living person, has shared her secret of becoming a supercentenarian: avoid arguments.
At 115 years old, Caterham has been confirmed by the Gerontology Research Group as next to Brazilian Inah Canabarro, a Catholic nun, who died at age 116 last Wednesday (April 30).
Currently a resident of a nursing home in Surrey, southwest of London, Caterham, was born on Aug. 21, 1909, the year that a little-known young electronics genius created the first wireless telephone.
A native in a southern England village of Shipton Bellinger, Ethel was the second youngest of eight siblings.
At the age of 18, Caterham worked as a nanny for a British family during her journey to India.
She married Norman, an officer of the British Army, during a dinner party in 1931 in Hong Kong. They had two daughters who were raised in the United Kingdom.
Caterham lost her husband when she was 67 years old.
According to her, the secret of longevity is trying to get along well with everybody.
The British supercentenarian has succeeded in avoiding arguments by just listening to anyone then “do what I like.”
Women have dominated the list of the world’s oldest persons. The list reflects the names of 35 female supercentenarians who are older than Joao Marinho Neto, the oldest man who is 112 years old.
