QUEZON CITY—A senior citizens group is calling on Quezon City government officials to take immediate action against the blatant discrimination being imposed on elderly folk by the management of Araneta Center in Cubao.
Through its president Benjamin Rosario, the Marilag Senior Citizens Association revealed that parking facilities controlled by Araneta Center are unfairly charging senior citizens higher rates than non-senior motorists—an outright violation of the rights and privileges granted under City Ordinance No. SP - 3234.
According to Rosario, he personally discovered this discriminatory practice when he saw parking notices at Ali Mall stating that seniors must pay ₱10 more than younger motorists for every hour in excess of the three-hour which imposes a uniform rate.
Under the city ordinance, seniors need not pay the basic charge imposed for the first three hours of parking space use.
On March 11, he was charged ₱160 for parking at Gateway II for 10 hours and 15 minutes, despite availing of the three-hour free parking privilege for seniors. Shockingly, when he was about to pay, the cashier suggested that he can hide the senior card and pay as a non-senior for only ₱140—₱20 less than the supposed "discounted" rate.
“This is a clear case of discrimination. Instead of giving senior citizens the mandatory discount, Araneta Center is making them pay more. This is not just unfair—it is an insult,” Rosario stressed.
Araneta Center has been a commercial giant in Quezon City for almost six decades, but according to Rosario, its management demonstrated how it neglects its corporate responsibility to the city’s residents—particularly seniors and persons with disabilities.
“I find it appalling that after all these years, Araneta Center still refuses to give back to Quezon City’s residents, especially those who need consideration the most,” he said.
The retired journalist further recalled that when the Araneta group was granted a permit to develop the Cubao commercial district in the 1960’s, a city ordinance required the management to allocate free parking spaces as part of its corporate social responsibility.
“This was a condition set by the city government to ensure convenience for the public. Instead of upholding this commitment, Araneta Center is now squeezing extra money from senior citizens,” he added.
MSCA is urging Quezon City authorities to intervene immediately and put an end to this unjust practice. The association calls on seniors and concerned citizens to speak out and demand fair treatment for the elderly.
