Peter Yarrow, one-third of the famed Peter, Paul and Mary who personally performed for Filipinos to help celebrate the People Power victory in 1986, has died.
Yarrow, 86, succumbed to bladder cancer at his home in Manhattan, his publicist Ken Sunshine has announced.
With Yarrow’s passing, the popular trio who espoused civil rights and anti-war advocacies in their songs is left with only Noel Paul Stookey, now 87.
Mary Travers died in 2009 after a five-year battle with leukemia.
Yarrow co-wrote the group’s most popular song, “Puff the magic Dragon”.
“Our fearless dragon is tired and has entered the last chapter of his magnificent life. The world knows Peter Yarrow the iconic folk activist but the human being behind the legend is every bit as generous, creative, passionate, playful and wise as his lyrics suggest,” said his daughter Bethany in a statement following Yarrow’s death.
The American trio is remembered in the Philippines for helping stoke the fire of patriotism that prevailed in the country during the first anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution, a civilian-backed military coup that brought down the overthrew the corrupt government of then President Ferdinand Marcos.
Before splitting up, Peter Paul and Mary produced six Billboard Top singles; two No. 1 albums and captured five Grammy’s.
Among their most beloved songs are “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and Blowin’ in the Wind” which were both written by famed folk singer Bob Dylan.
The group went on hiatus in 1970 to pursue solo careers but performed together in 1978 for an anti-nuclear power concert “Survival Sunday” that Yarrow organized in Los Angeles.
This signal their return as a group. However, Peter, Paul and Mary disbanded anew in 2009 following the death of Travers.
A native New Yorker, Yarrow started his musical development with the violin but later favored the guitar to follow the footsteps of folk music greats Woody Guthrie and Peter Seeger.
He was a graduate of Cornell University but chose a musical path for his career which started to pick up only after the Peter, Paul and Mary trio was organized.
