Jury finds Australian woman guilty of poisoning former in-laws; three seniors killed but not ex-husband

7/7/25, 7:16 AM

VICTORIA, Australia - A 12-member jury has found an Australian woman guilty of killing senior citizen parents and another relative of her estranged husband after inviting them to lunch and served them Beef Wellington laced with lethal death cap mushrooms.

Erin Patterson was also guilty of frustrated murder of another relative of her ex-husband, Simon Patterson, who declined the lunch invitation and cheated possible death.

Now 50, Erin will serve a long prison term for the death of Simon’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, both septuagenarians; and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson.

Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived the poisoning but spent weeks in a hospital.

Erin hosted lunch for the four victims on July 29, 2023, all of whom were later rushed to the hospital due to poisoning after ingesting death cap mushroom. The invitation for the get-together at her home in Leongatha,Victoria was sent to Simon and his relatives but the ex-husband declined.

During the 10-week trial, Erin’s lawyers made strong attempts to convince the jury that what happened was a “terrible accident. The defense counsels insisted that Erin merely wanted to improve the taste of the meal thus, was prompted to forage mushrooms to mix with the main dish.

To convince the jury that there was no intent to harm the victims, the accused testified that she even fed her children with leftover Beef Wellington but none of them got sick.

Doctors revealed that death cap mushrooms contain amanita toxins that prevent the production of proteins in liver cells. This process kills cells resulting to liver failure in about two days after eating them.

Details of how the jury arrived at the conclusion of Erin’s guilty have not been released to the public.

However, the verdict suggests that the jurors accepted the prosecution’s claim that the accused had traveled to two areas in April and May 2023 to pick the mushrooms she included in the meal.

Prosecutor Nanette Rogers also accused Erin of holding a grudge against the Pattersons. She cited an alleged Facebook post the accused sent to her friends where she suggested that she wanted “nothing to do with” her former husband’s family.

She allegedly wrote: “I’m sick of this shit I want nothing to do with them. I thought his parents would want him to do the right thing but it seems their conern about not wanting to feel uncomfortable and not wanting to get involved in their son’s personal mattes are overriding that so f*** them.”

Sentencing has been set for a later date.
