NEGROS ISLAND, Negros Occidental — Eleven volcanic earthquakes, including two volcanic tremors that lasted 3 to 4 minutes long, were recorded at Mount Kanlaon, indicating a strong possibility that it may erupt again, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned.

Based on the latest bulletin from Phivolcs, the volcano's edifice has remained inflated even as it emitted some 4,328 tonnes of sulfur dioxide, as well as a moderate 150 meter tall plume that drifted northwest and west.

Throughout the whole month of January the current year, the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory recorded around 70 ash emission events. Research specialist Perly Sianson said the ash emissions are one of the indicators that the volcano may possibly erupt again.

Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Kanlaon, signaling a magmatic unrest following its eruption on December 9 the previous year. The volcano erupted twice, displacing close to 50,000 individuals or over 11,000 families in 32 barangays in Western Visayas and Central Visayas.

Phivolcs advised residents of barangays near Kanlaon should be on the lookout for possible hazards that may occur include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall and lahars during heavy rains.
