DILIMAN, Lungsod Quezon — Makaraang kumpirmahin ng Indiana State ang mga outbreak ng H5N1 avian influenza strain sa ilang poultry farm, minabuting ipagutos ng Department of Agriculture (DA) ang temporary ban sa pag-angkat ng manok at iba pang ibon at kanila produkto upang maiwasan ang posibleng pagpasok ng sakit sa Pilipinas.

Ayon kay agriculture secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., inaprubahan niya ang pagbabawal upang mapativil ang mga importasyon ng iba't ibang mga poultry product mula sa nasabing Midwestern state ng Estados Unidos.

Nilinaw ni Laurel na ito ang naging desisyon matapos matanggap ang February 23 report mula sa Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) ng US Department of Agriculture na nagkumpirma sa multiple outbreak ng H5N1 sa Indiana ng National Veterinary Services Laboratories sa Ames, Iowa.

Hinayag ng DA na ang mabilis na pagkalat ng virus sa US mainland ang nagbunsod para sa mas malawak na trade restriction upang maprotektahan ang multibilyong pisong poultry industry ng bansa laban sa posibleng exposure sa H5N1 virus. Sa ilalim ng 2016 bilateral animal health arrangement sa pagitan ng Maynila at Washington, maaaring magpatupad ng state-wide kung Umabot sa tatlo o labis na county sa isang US state ang apektado ng bird flu.

"The import ban immediately suspends the processing and issuance of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Import Clearances (SPSICs) for the covered commodities. Previously approved SPS clearances for live birds are automatically revoked. However, shipments already in transit, loaded, or accepted at port before the circular’s effectivity may still enter the Philippines—provided the products were slaughtered or produced on or before January P306," pinaliwanag ni Laurel.

"All non-compliant shipments will be confiscated or dealt with under existing quarantine regulations. Veterinary quarantine officers across major ports have been instructed to enforce strict inspection and stoppage protocols," kanyang tinukoy.
