Seventeen mayors are calling on government to name politicians and contractors who have colluded in collecting billions of pesos in profit and kickbacks through the implementation of overpriced but defective flood control and other infrastructure projects.
Forming themselves into the Mayors for Good Governance, the local executives gathered on Saturday (Aug. 16) to issue a statement against the “massive corruption” that have taken place in the awarding of big infrastructure projects of the government.
The group is being led by Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong who had taken a strong stance against fraudulent projects being executed by the Department of Public Works and Highways and other government entities granted huge allocations in implementing infrastructure projects.
Strongly supporting Magalong were Mayors Vico Sotto of Pasig City; Joy Belmonte of Quezon City and Sitti Hataman of Isabela City in Basilan.
The group issued a statement urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to identify personalities behind the fraud-ridden flood control projects that were implemented since the start of his term as chief executive in 2022.
The city mayors said they stand firmly with the Filipino people in seeking the truth and demanding accountability on the controversial issues.
“Flood control projects have existed for decades, but over the past years, corruption in these projects have become more alarming, pervasive and systematic,” said the good governance organization.
“Those who have stolen public funds must face the full force of the law. Once proven guilty, politicians and bureaucrats must not only be removed from office, but also prosecuted and jailed,” the group added.
