The Philippine National Police (PNP) reiterated on Tuesday (April 9) its call for netizens to remain vigilant in their online activities as cybercrime cases surged in the first quarter of the year.
According to the latest data from the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), there were 4,469 cybercrime incidents reported from January to March 2024, marking a 21.84 percent increase from the 3,668 incidents recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Maj. Gen. Sidney Hernia, the ACG chief, noted that online selling scams were the most prevalent cybercrimes with 990 cases, followed by 319 cases of investment scams and 309 cases of debit/credit card fraud, among others.
Hernia attributed the rise in cybercrime incidents to several factors, including the growing trend of online activities, the increasingly sophisticated tactics of cybercriminals, and a general lack of awareness among the public.
The ACG chief highlighted the importance of educating oneself about cybercrimes, advising individuals to stay informed by following news coverage on the subject and familiarizing themselves with the red flags in online transactions to avoid falling victim to scams and fraud.
He also assured that the PNP would continue to conduct comprehensive training, seminars, and lectures for personnel assigned to cybercrime desks to enhance their skills and knowledge, thus contributing to a safer online environment.
