DILIMAN, Quezon City — To alleviate the long queueing of passengers in most of Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) stations, transportation secretary Vivencio 'Vince' Dizon is considering the complete removal of all x-ray scanners tasked with checking luggage and hand-carry bags of all travelers and commuters of the metro rail system.

This came after several reports reached the DoTr that detailed how the x-ray machines were the main reason for the long queues of passengers ang commuters.

“Hopefully, with the help of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), we can implement additional security measures at the stations so that we can eventually completely remove these x-ray machines,” Dizon said in a radio interview.

Early last week, the transportation chief, along with DICT secretary Henry Aguda, inspected several MRT stations, following an order from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to help assuage the hardships of the riding public in accessing mass transportation like the Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems and MRT.

“With the help of our DICT, if we have new technology, we might be able to eliminate all the x-ray machines. You see in other countries, when you ride the MRT, subway, or metro, there are no x-ray machines because they use other technologies to ensure the security of passengers and facilities,” Dizon pointed out.

Currently, only passengers without bags are allowed to bypass x-ray inspections at MRT stations.
However, if the x-ray michines are finally eliminated, Dizon vowed to maintain security by deploying additional law enforcement personnel and K-9 units to ensure safety to all passengers.
