Gun violence marred the victory rally of the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl on Wednesday (February 14) when a mass shooting cut the celebration and resulted in the death of a woman and the wounding of at least 21 individuals, many of them children.
Police said three persons were arrested after the incident and are now under investigation. Motive of the shooting remained unclear.
Ross Grundyson, head of the Kansas City fire department, said many of the victims sustained serious injuries.
“We had eight what we considered immediately life-threatening patients, we had seven with life threatening injuries and had six that had minor injuries,” Grundyson told a press conference.
Eight of those hit wre children, authorities revealed.
The fatality had been identified as a disc jockey of a local radio station and a mother of two children.
The three men in police custody have reportedly been tackled by the angry crowd and were identified as the gunmen. This information has yet to be verified.
Police will determine how many people actually fired their weapons and if who among them targeted random victims among the crowd.
Reports have indicated that the merrymaking for the Superbowl victory of the Kansas City Chiefs was attended by at least one million people who gathered at the Union Station in downtown Kansas City.
“We do not have a motive, but we are asking those who may potentially have any kind of information, a witness or video, to contact police,” said Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves.
