The case of a cancer-stricken 70-year-old Vietnamese immigrant who was hospitalized after being thrown to the ground by an Oklahoma police officer has sparked a racial controversy in the United States.
Lich Vu reportedly suffered injuries and has been hospitalized since the incident happened last October 27.
The Oklahoma police department has sent Officer Joseph Gibson on administrative leave while an internal investigation is being conducted.
The incident happened near the corner of 39th Street and meridian Avenue during an argument over a traffic violation ticket Gibson tried to serve Vu.
A footage from a Gibson’s body-worn camera showed that Vu protested that he did not commit any violation while Gibson insisted that he made an illegal U-Turn and asked the motorist to sign the ticket.
The portion where the police officer threw down the elderly car owner to the ground was fast and showed that before this, Vu apparently had tapped his fingers at the police officer then told him to shut up.
Right after Vu was thrown down, Gibson put the handcuffs on Vu.
When Gibson realized Vu had lost consciousness, he reportedly removed the handcuffs when the paramedics arrived.
Teresa, Vu’s daughter, shared on Facebook her father’s fate, noting that he required surgery for brain bleeding.
Vu, who is suffering from bone cancer, has regained consciousness but experiencing a certain degree of memory loss.
IN a statement, Vietnamese American Community of Oklahoma president-elect Thuan Nguyen said: “In our community, we want to make sure we see justice in that these things don’t happen to another person.”
