Relationship between the United States and Israel appeared to be drawing to a hostile scenario after the Biden administration on Friday (May 1)) aired serious misgivings over Israel’s use of weapons it supplied.
The US government strongly criticized the administration of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for allegedly violating international humanitarian law in launching a military operations in Gaza.
However, the Biden government failed to present a definitive evaluation of Israel’s alleged violation as it admitted failing to veryfy specific instances where use of the weapons US supplied was made.
In a 46-page assessment unclassified by the State Department, it was disclosed that breaches of international human rights laws may have been committed by Israel in its use of US-sourced weapons in its Gaza operations.
According to observers the findings may further put at risk the already souring ties between the two allied nations.
Earlier, the Biden administration put on hold one package of arms following a major policy shift. The US said it was still reviewing long-term support for the israel.
“Given Israel’s significant reliance on US-made defense articles, it is reasonable to assess that defense articles covered under NSM-20 have been used by Israel security forces since October 7 in instances inconsistent with its IHL, obligations or with established best practices for mitigating civilian harm,” said the State Department report.
The report added: “Israel has not shared complete information to verify whether US defense articles covered under NSM-20 were specifically used in actions that have been alleged as violations of IHL or IHRI, in Gaza or in the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the period of the report.”
