Just hours after Vice President Sara Duterte decried the ongoing Senate probe into allegations of sex and physical abuse against evangelist Apollo Quiboloy, the House of Represented cited him in contempt for his continued refusal to attend hearings of the Committee on Legislative Franchises.
The same House panel approved on Monday (March 12) a bill proposing to revoke the legislative franchise granted the Sonshine Media Network Inc., a broadcast station believed to be owned by Quiboloy.
Duterte, concurrent secretary of the Department of Education said many are convinced that the Senate inquiry into criminal allegations against Quiboloy should end and instead be brought to court.
“Ako po ay nakikiisa sa panawagan ng pagpapairal ng batas at katarungan sa hinaharap na isyu ni Pastor Apollo Quiboloy at ng SMNI,” Duterte said in a statement aired over SMNI on Monday night.
The Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality is conducting an inquiry into allegations aired by witnesses that Quiboloy subjected them to sexual and physical abuses while they were still serving as leaders of Quiboloy’s Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Another citation for contempt has been approved by the House Committee on Legislative Franchises after Quiboloy failed anew to show up in the ongoing hearings of the House panel on Monday.
Quiboloy has been subpoenaed by the legislative franchises panel for him to clarify his links with the SMNI which is the object of an on-going investigation by the committee.
Quiboloy’s failure to show up yesterday prompted the committee to order the House sergeant-at-arms to physically bring the Bible preacher who founded the KoJC and who declared himself as the “appointed son of God.”
Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel moved to have Quiboloy cited in contempt for ignoring two summonses and a subpoena issued by the House panel for his appearance in the hearings.
“It is very clear that he (Quiboloy) has no intention whatsoever of appearing in this committee. Under the HOuse rules, it is our obligation to show these people who take this committee for granted the sanctions taht can be meted,” said Pimentel.
Also during the hearing, the committee approved without amendments House bill No. 9710 proposing to recall and terminate the legislative franchise Congress has issued to Swara Sug Media Corporation which operate the SMNI.
It was also Pimentel who moved for the approval of the bill and the termination of hearings on the measure.
“This is already the sixth meeting we conducted. We have already heard all sides pertaining to this matter,” said Pimentel.
