2/25/24, 1:40 PM

Pope Francis has approved the resignation of a Polish archbishop implicated in allegations of concealing sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, according to a statement from the Vatican released on Saturday (February 24).

The apostolic nunciature of Poland, acting as the Vatican's embassy equivalent, announced on its website that Archbishop Andrzej Dziega's resignation from his role as Archbishop Metropolitan of Szczecin-Kamien has been accepted by Pope Francis.

At the age of 71, Dziega serves as a Polish Roman Catholic bishop and has held the position of archbishop in the Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamien.

Allegations surfaced in 2021 through a documentary aired on TVN24, implicating the late priest Andrzej Dymer, who allegedly abused children since 1995.

.Despite the allegations being made public, no significant actions had been taken until now.

Reports from Polish media have persistently highlighted accusations of negligence and cover-ups within the Catholic Church concerning cases of child abuse.
