MALACAÑAN, Manila — Following President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. (PBBM)'s vow find who' s responsible for the collapse of the Cabagan-Santa Maria bridge in Isabela, a Palace official has proposed that the government should inspect bridges constructed during the administration of former president Rodrigo 'Rody' Duterte (FPRRD).
On personally inspecting the collapsed portion of the newly opened bridge, that was constructed for almost a decade and at a project cost of ₱1.22 billion, President Marcos Jr. had opined that the unfortunate incident was due to cost cuts that resulted in its 'flawed' design.
“This is the only suspension bridge in the world that I’ve seen that is not supported by cables. As you can see, the steel gave way. If they used cables, it wouldn’t collapse,” Marcos had stated.
Presidential Communications Office undersecretary Claire Castro enthused that the inspection would determine whether other bridges were 'under-designed', allegedly like the collapsed Isabela bridge last week that resulted in the injury of eight people, including a child, and damages on several vehicles.
“It’s also good to suggest—and the administration will probably do this—that we inspect all of the bridges, especially those built during the time of former President Duterte, with the help of the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) and the local government units,” Castro noted.
“We don’t know if these were also under-designed. So, as much as possible, all of them should be inspected,” she added.
The President had blamed the bridge collapse on cost-cutting, which led to a “flawed, poor” design and on overloading as well.
Marcos Jr. cited the project cost was supposed to have been ₱1.8 billion, but for cost-saving reasons, it was brought down to under ₱1 billion and eventually raised to over ₱1. 2 billion.
