Obiena right on track for Paris Olympics, wins gold in Croatia meet

Top Filipino athlete EJ Obiena captured the gold medal in the Memorial Josip Gasparac games as he continued to raise hopes for a possible Philippine gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.


Obiena, ranked second among world’s pole vaulters, won the top place in the games held in Osijek, Croatia by clearing 5.83 meters.

He will compete in the coming World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland as part of his preparations for the Paris games.

“Indoor season finally kicked off. 5.83 for the win here,” Obiena said in his Instagram post.

The country’s bet for a gold medal will proceed to the ISTAF Indoor in Berlin, Germany on Friday.

He is the reigning king of pole vault in Asia after registering a record of six meters. He ruled the event in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last year.
