Losing pres’l bets, actors and name-recall favorites included in Marcos-backed senatorial slate

9/26/24, 8:32 AM

A mix of rivals in the 2022 presidential race, popular actors, re-electionists and political name-recall favorites will make up President Ferdinand Marcos’ team for the 2025 senatorial race.

Former Senators Manny Pacquiao and Panfilo Lacson were in Marcos’ lineup. Both were presidential contenders whom Marcos defeated in 2022.

Re-electionist Senators Bong Revilla and Lito Lapid are joining former Senate President Tito Sotto in the team. All three won Senate seats due to their popularity as actors.

ACT-CIS Partylist Rep. Erwin Tulfo, youngest of the popular Tulfo brothers in Philippine journalism, will also get Marcos' endorsement. The two have apparently buried the hatchet a year after the chief executive, reportedly upon the prodding of wife Liza, unceremoniously fired Tulfo as social welfare secretary due to his alliance with former Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez.

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay and Las Piñas Rep. Camille Villar have to rely heavily on their family names and wealth to join the Senate win column.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr., one of the more highly-reliable members of the Cabinet, and presidential sister Sen. Imee Marcos may be considered as the true Marcos candidates.

Senators Francis Tolentino and Pia Cayetano previously ran and won their Senate seats under the Hugpong ng Pagbabago coalition that Vice President Sara Duterte formed.

Marcos and Duterte have decided to break their successful political partnership as it became apparent that the chief executive will push for the candidacy of his cousin, Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Duterte's decision to run as Marcos’ running-mate in 2022 has been widely credited for his victory.

Marcos announced the members of the administration’s senatorial slate during a political event at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Calling the coalition “Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas”, Marcos said the group will "united the broadest force of those who love the country.”
