Hidilyn falters in Paris Olympics qualifiers

4/4/24, 8:34 AM

Age has denied Philippine weightlifting heroine Hidilyn Diaz Naranjo another attempt to bring home an Olympics gold medal.

Diaz-Naranjo, 33, the first ever Filipino gold medalist in an Olympics competition, failed to qualify for her fifth trip to the Olympics after Elreen Ando of Cebu overtook her in the final qualification face-off at the International Weightlifting Federation World Cup held recently in Phuket, Thailand.

The Olympics medalist faltered with an 11th overall finish to deny her the lone ticket available for the Paris Olympics.

Ando, 25, finished with No. 7 in the women’s 59kg category.

According to sports reporters, the top 10 competitors in each category will be sent to France.

Ando lifted a personal best of 228 kilograms with 100 in the snatch and 12i in the clean and jerk categories.

Diaz-Naranjo led by one kilogram over Ando’s snatch score. However, in the clean and jerk, the silver medalist in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, Diaz-Naranjo failed twice in lifting 127.

Reacting to the sad news about Diaz-Naranjo, former Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevella, president of the Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas, said Hidilyn remains one of the country;’s most respected athletes.

Aside from Ando, other Filipino qualifiers to the Paris Olympis are EJ Obiena for pole vault; gymnasts Carlos Yulo and Aleah Finnegan, boxers NEsthy PEtecio, Eumir Marcial and Aira Villegas, and weightlifters John Februar Ceniza and Rosegie Ramos.
