Embattled Bible preacher Pastor Apollo Quiboloy would have continued hiding but fear of “lawless violence” happening inside the Kingdom of Jesus Christ headquarters that might place his followers lives in danger forced him to surrender.
Police authorities serving a warrant for his arrest scoured the vast KofJC compound in Davao City for days in search for the man facing sex offenses filed by women following his Bible teachings. However, Quiboloy, 74, was apparently not within the area.
His lawyers tried every legal maneuver available to them to stop the alleged “unlawful takeover” of the KOJC headquarters but courts have upheld the search as legal.
With Quiboloy’s battery of lawyers running out of legal option, it was feared that devotees of his religion and the police might end up in a violent clash.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Quiboloy legal counsel Israelito Torreon said his client decided to do the “ultimate sacrifice” of ending weeks of evading arrest.
“He could not bear to witness a second longer the sufferings that his flock was experiencing for many days,” Torreon stated.
The defense lawyer said: “Even if he has the right to await the result of the legal remedies being resorted to by his lawyers, he decided to make the ultimate sacrifice by surrendering himself to the PNP and the AFP.”
“Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy was actually waiting for positive results vis-a-vis the legal remedies that his lawyers opted to avail, hence, he was out of reach for a number of days,” he insisted.
Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla said that instead of hiding, the doomsday preacher had only one legal option left that he must observe - that is to surrender to the jurisdiction of the courts
Quiboloy stands accused of committing sex offenses against women; abuses committed against a child and human trafficking.
He was also ordered taken into police custody by the two chambers of Congress to ensure his presence in separate inquiries in aid of legislation.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has also been pursuing quiboloy who had been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of sex trafficking of children, sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion. A federal warrant was released by the court in November 2021.
