Daly City mother, son arrested for ‘execution’ style shooting of Fil-Am senior citizen

10/7/24, 2:55 AM

A 21-year-old man and his mother have been arrested by Daly City police following the reported “execution” style murder of a senior Filipino-American gym custodian near the victim’s home on Sunday (September 29).

Police said Maarij Abdullah Afridi, a Daly City resident, has been booked for the murder of Rolando Viray Yanga, 60. The suspect’s mother, 50-year-old Zaib Un Nisa Afridi faces a charge for her alleged role as an accomplice.

Yanga, described as a caring and beloved father by his family, was reportedly shot to death after the Afridis followed him home from a gym where he worked as a custodian.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said the incident was triggered by an argument between the Yanga and his attackers over the refusal of Maarij to follow the house rules.

Wagstaff said Yanga called Maarij’s attention for violating the rules such as maintaining cleanliness and the prohibition against walking barefoot.

He described the killing as “an execution murder”.

When Yanga headed home after his duty around 7 pm on Sunday, he was reportedly followed by the suspects.

On board a car driven by Zaib, the suspects caught up on Yanga in the 1300 block of south Mayfair Avenue. Maarij, using a 10 caliber pistol, opened fire at the Fil-Am.

As the victim went down, Maarij approached him then fired more shots at Yanga until he was sure the senior citizen was dead.
