1/16/24, 1:35 PM

Deputy Director for Information Mao Ning of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs implied in a press conference that Marcos lacked enough knowledge about the Taiwan issue as demonstrated by his actions when Lai won the recent elections.

“We suggest that President Marcos read more books to properly understand the ins and outs of the Taiwan issue, so as to draw the right conclusions,” Mao was quoted as saying during the press conference.

Mao said a “strong protest” will be lodged swiftly while the Philippine ambassador was summoned to “give China a responsible explanation.”

China has been enraged by the results of the polls because Lai is a strong advocate of his country’s independent stance from the mainland.

Marcos extended his congratulations to Lai for his political victory although the Philippine government at the same time that it remains faithful to the ‘one China policy’ in reference to its diplomatic relations with Beijing.

According to Mao China is “strongly dissatisfied with and resolutely opposes” the remarks sent by the Philippine president to the Taiwanese leader.

“The relevant remarks of President Marcos constitute a serious violation of the One China principle and … a serious breach of the political commitments made by the Philippines to the Chinese side, and a gross interference in China’s internal affairs,” she declared.

The Department of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the Philippines sincerity in upholding the One China Policy, stressing that Marcos’ congratulatory message is just his way of thanking Taiwan for hosting some 200,000 overseas Filipino workers to various jobs in the island.

“The message of President Marcos congratulating the new president was his way of thanking them for hosting our OFWs and holding a successful democratic process. Nevertheless, the Philippines reaffirms its ONe Chnina Policy,” the DFA statement said.
