A week after the failed assassination of top presidential race rival former President Donald Trump and growing suspicions about his state of health, US President Joe Biden gave up his re-election bid with four months left before the presidential voting..
Biden endrsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place in attempting to maintain the retention of a Democrat in the White House.
Biden’s decision came on Sunday (PH July 22), after he notified his senior staff about his decision to drop out from the 2024 presidential race. His message was announced to the public immediately.
Even before this, several Democratic leaders have entertained suspicions that the incumbent president’s age and health would adversely affect his chances of winning.
This was exacerbated by the much-publicized frustrated attempt to kill Trump that boosted the Republican bet’s popularity in making a return to the presidency.
On Saturday, Biden, who had not been seen in the campaign trail for a few days, started writing a letter to all Americans about his decision to pull out from the elections and carry out his remaining duties as chief executive.
He also made several phone calls to Harris to inform her that she would get her endorsement at the party’s convention.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interst of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of may term,” Biden told Americans in a letter.
to Democrats, Biden stated: “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
The US president said his decision to pick Harris for his vice president in 2020 was the “best decision” he has made.
“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats —it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”
