Be clever and vigilant against new rewards scam - CICC

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center has urged Filipinos to be more clever in their usage of the internet following reports of the prevalence of mobile rewards scams in the cyberspace.
CICC Executive Director Alexander K. Ramos issued the warning as the agency noted that a rewards scam has started to parrot a Globe Telecom advisory in trying to victimized unwary mobile phone users.
He specifically pointed to the “globeeph.top” domain that allegedly preys on customers through short message service or SMS.
The domain has reportedly tricked a number of users by reminding them that their current points account was due to expire and should be redeemed immediately before they expire.
The CICC said customers usually received the following message: “The globe service reminds you that your current points account (3,022 points) will expire today. Redeem your points as soon as possible: https:/globeph.top/i. Please reply Y and then SMS, open the SMS to activate the link, or copy the link to the Safari browser and open it.”
As soon as the domain is clicked, the unwitting victim is directed to a website that requires his or her personal details and bank account numbers to be able to redeem the alleged points.
The CICC’s anti-fraud team recommended the blocking of the domain even as it reminded the public to continue their vigilance against SMS fraud.
Ramos said that blocking the domain will prevent it from victimizing users.
However, Ramos said the best way to prevent fraudulent itnernet transactions is for people to be more alert in using the cyberspace.
