Alvarez defends “seditious” statement against gov’t; but later apologizes?

4/16/24, 11:15 AM

Former speaker and Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez on Tuesday (April 16) defended his statements calling on the military to withdraw support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., saying that his utterances were a legitimate exercise of the freedom of speech.

However, a national daily reported late afternoon on Tuesday that Alvarez publicly apologized for his behavior, saying that he was merely carried away.

Alvarez said his colleagues in the Lower House were wrong in claiming that his action was seditious and constituted a violation of ethical standards for lawmakers.

Explaining his statement during a prayer rally in Tagum City, Alvarez, a loyal political ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, issued a press release claiming that what he cited were “grievances, including his consistent warning against the foreign policy direction taken by the Marcos administration.

He further explained that Marcos’s alliance with the Americans as the Philippines pursues its territorial claims over the South China Sea only “serves the interests of the Americans” and put the “lives and liberties of Filipinos at risk.”

“Patapos na ang siglo ng mga Amerikano, tapos doon pa nila gusto pumusta? Pag-isipan ito ng mabuti,” The former House leader stated.

According to Alvarez his statements against the Marcos government are “constituionally-protected rights to freedom of speech and assembly.”

“Paano naging seditious at orderly conduct and pag-exercise ng constitutional rights?” he asked.

A number of his colleagues in the Lower House chided Alvarez for suggesting during the rally that the Armed Forces of the Philippines must now withdraw its support for Marcos.

House Assistant Majority leader and Zambales Rep. Jay Khonghun said Alvarez’s declaration in Tagum City was “not merely an expression of dissent but a calculated attempt to destabilize the government.”

”The clear intention behind Alvarez's remarks is to sow chaos and instability in our nation," Khonghun said.

Senior administration Rep. Johnny Pimentel believe that Alvarez may committed an act of sedition.

“The remarks of the former speaker are uncalled for. That is tantamount to an act of sedition or rebellion,” said Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel.

On the other hand, Lanao del Norte Rep. Mohammad Khalid Dimaporo, said Alvarez’s actions may potentially subject him to a probe of the Committee on Ethics.

“I would kindly urge the former speaker to be cautious with his words and be clear on his intent. At face value, his anti-government statements are unbecoming of a member of the House of Representatives and may warrant an ethics case against him,” said Dimaporo, chairman of the House Committee on Muslim Affairs.
